To Raise a King The Broken Crown Justin Orton 9781520192192 Books

To Raise a King by Justin Orton is an exciting, fast-paced fantasy adventure that takes Matt, an orphaned boy from our time and place, and hurtles him back in time and right in the thicket of the King Arthur legend. The author's descriptive and crisp writing bring the reader right into the imaginary world of Scotland in the ancient days of knights and magic. The scenes of fighting and war are handled with gut-wrenching precision that kept me cringing as well as turning the pages to find out what happened next. Matt is an extremely likable hero and his dog, Mia, is one of my favorite characters. The original plot deftly combines science fiction and fantasy, and I think that this talented author would have been able to pull off an exciting story even without incorporating the King Arthur legend. Fans of King Arthur and Merlin who appreciate that story (in its various forms) more than I do may find that those elements just add another exiting layer to the action. This is the beginning of a new series, and I am eager to read more and to follow the path of Justin Orton.

What happens when History and Legend collides…?

Matt longs for what he does not have. A family. A mother who loves him. A father to guide him. Instead, he lives in a home for boys. Abandoned. Forgotten. Alone. His only comfort is his dog, Mia.

Matt is so determined to find his parents that he takes matters into his own hands and runs away. What he didn't expect was to end up in 6th Century Scotland! What happens next will challenge everything he thought he knew about himself, the world, and as it turns out, the not so legendary King Arthur.

Rich in history, overflowing with Arthurian myths and legends, Justin Orton takes his readers on quite a journey. With an elegant wit and descriptive prose, Orton brings to life the beauty and the brutality of 6th Century Scotland. To Raise a King (The Broken Crown Book 1) is so rich in detail that I could smell the rain in the air, see the vastness of the lochs, and the majestic heights of the mountains.

The protagonist, Matt, is an incredibly courageous young man who's life is turned completely upside down. Everything he thought he knew turns out to be a lie. Suddenly, King Arthur isn't a fairy story and Merlin is real. Matt finds himself part of this very complicated world to which he had no prior knowledge of. Matt has courage beyond his years, and I could not help but like him. He is the hero of this story. Matt was very real in the telling, and his character drove the story forward and kept me turning those pages.

Orton has obviously spent a lot of time researching this fascinating era, and it comes across in the writing. I like what he did with the Arthurian Legend, and he gave this ancient story a slight Science-Fiction twist which worked remarkably well.

A great deal happens in this book, and there is this sense that no one is as they seem and at one point I was questioning, just like Matt, who were the bad guys! I like a book that makes me think!!

To Raise a King (The Broken Crown Book 1) is an action-packed adventure, that kept me turning those pages. I look forward to reading more books in this series. Justin Orton, you have got yourself a new fan!!

I Highly Recommend!!
An interesting story plot which is not overly complicated yet has enough twists to keep one guessing. Well written. A very enjoyable book. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed this book. I originally thought this book might be similar to other books of this Genre. However the book was soon filled with many unexpected twists and turns. The characters were great and I enjoyed the physical picture drawn by the author. A great read but now I have to wait for books 2 & 3.
To Raise a King was a very enjoyable read. It’s a period novel that includes geography, fantasy, and time travel. I suspected that the author envisioned it for the youth market but the setting seemed to be the lure for me. After reading the Outlander series I have been hooked on time travel novels. It was a good purchase; kept me interested until the very end.
Orton writes in a style reminiscent of the greats of yesteryear. In his debut novel, he breaks out in a stunning fashion. If you enjoy the classics and their penchant for rich description, you will love To Raise a King. I highly recommend it!
To Raise a King is a unique take on Arthurian lore, combining elements of fantasy and sci-fi. I wasn't expecting the smattering of sci-fi, and when first introduced, I was not convinced it was a good fit and was nearly put off. But, the pace of the story, the wonderful characters, and the deception spun throughout won my mind over. The protagonist, Matt, is a genuinely likable character and he experiences a grand developmental arc. And Mia, his loyal dog, well, what's not to love about a dog side-kick. Overall, this was a fun read and I look forward to continuing Matt's journey.
A great read, intriguing mesh of a new tale with an old. Fits together nicely, and definitely leaves you eager to read on to find the outcome of an unexpected twist. Like a great movie or tv series, it engages you with multiple times and places at once, and keeps you coming back for the next episode. Nice character development and location descriptions transport you, making you feel like you are there. Deserving of a movie script at the completion of the book trilogy!
