a quick, entertaining read. the author creates a fun narrative in a way that isn't heavy-handed. if you're looking for a very intense, serious world-building narrative that's been years in the making then this probably isn't for you. if you're looking for a break between books and want something different, i would definitely recommend it!Product details

Stormrider Ben Stava 9781534989498 Books Reviews
This book is a fun sci-fi read. I loved getting to know the characters and seeing how the story played out. I do hope to know what happens next. Possibly a sequel?
The SciFi novella (way too short to be labeled an eBook) "Stormrider," is an inane, immature, uninformed, climate-change based, near future story of humans colonizing Earth-like planets.
Humans have developed both "stasis pods," and FTL travel, a couple of decades in the near future (2040). This follows a catastrophic, global climate-change, and intense, international conflict. The story's lead character is a twenty-nine (29) year old, astrobiologist "slacker," who thinks people in their 30's are "...old...," and decides to enlist in a newly formed space force. After a couple of months of basic training, he is assigned to a SpecOps squad, who are sent to a colony where the colonists have gone missing. Upon arrival, they discover the colonists have been taken and/or killed, are ambushed by humanoid "Viking types," are decimated, rescued by a peaceful clan, and mount a rescue operation. Remember I opined the story was inane?
The author is both condescending and pretentious in his viewpoint regarding climate-change. He has little or no knowledge of the military, gets his science from films which he cites constantly, and cannot keep his story straight. There were thirty (30) colonists originally, then twenty-five (25) further in. Who would launch an interstellar colony with either number? He has the adolescent SciFi cliche of a lesbian couple, who are the randy, quarrelsome pilots of the "space shuttle-like" ship, included in the story. Frankly, other than the initial start of the novella, which was somewhat interesting, the entirety is written as if by a teenager, who binged-watched a slew of movies, and cobbled together a climate-change, SciFi, Viking fantasy saga. Perhaps entertaining to a youth audience, but not to grown ups.
The novella was fully read via Unlimited and is not recommended.
