When you read the author's bio, you are very surprised because you would think that he spent half his life as an Intel or spec ops guy. Obviously a phenomenal researcher.
I like my fiction to be realistic when it deals with real topics. Real people with real feelings and problems taking extraordinary risks; not superheroes who seem to defy the laws of gravity and logic. This book does not disappoint; if you want explosions at every turn with the quirky little smart comments ubiquitous to American TV shows, pick another book.
However, if you want an intellectual and plausible story with realistic type action here and there, based on the geopolitics of the real world, then I highly recommend this read. This is a book for people who want the technicalities of tradecraft and special ops war fighting done right. It is for people who already know that there is no job title called "CIA Agent". And most of all for people who know that super humans do not exist but that real humans can sometimes do super things.
Excellent story, plot and character development, and geopolitical and technical portrayal.

From the beginning of this book, we know we are in a worldwide story of global conflict that has roots in the past, and we know we are in the hands of a writer whose voice and know-how can guide us through such a story capably. Author Matt Fulton gives us the details we need to visualize the scenes he creates, and keeps the narrative rolling, making wise choices about where to keep his focus. Fulton takes us through military scenarios with precision.
This is a book that draws on history and military knowledge. It is clear, even before we read the author’s biographical statement, that homework has been done well and forms a solid spine throughout this book. This use of vivid details only adds to the effect of the story. Active Measures is a well-developed volume of a book that tracks in at well over six hundred pages. Fulton makes a long work seem like a brisk read with the world he creates.
Stylistically, the writing is active and strong, clipping along with the action of the story, the chapters sometimes just a few pages in length to give us what we need in the narrative – just what readers want from this genre. Fulton includes a realism here that makes the novel believable and strong, and the dialogue adds to the story. He also balances his story amid many ideas and locations, again keeping his focus with his reader in mind.
Recommended for readers who enjoy a good action novel, steeped in just the right of amount of research for grounding, and particularly for those who enjoy the spy genre. There are shades of Jason Bourne here, and maybe even a little Felix Leiter, cast in a down-to-earth scratched knuckle world of government analysis. If the ending is any indication, along with the “Part One” included in the title, there is even more story to tell than what this first entry offers.
Active Measures (part 1) by Matt Fulton is one of the best military spy novels I have read. His characters are like that of my favorite thriller movies. Just as real if not more believable than the Bourne Series. I was amazed at the depth of military knowledge and terms used within the book. It was as though Matt Fulton took readers on a real walk in tour of the scenes. The sights, sounds, and places were three-dimensional. I could visually see the everything as I read them. The characters were well-developed. Danger wasn't just a theme it was the reality of the whole novel. Threats were coming in from all sides. People found themselves dead or caught between the fire. Spies were real. Their knowledge and personalities suited perfectly. I couldn't find a single thing out of line in this read. Everything was detailed and need to know. Readers were caught in suspense wondering where and what would happen next. A bomb planted. Threat of it going off...
Active Measures (part 1) has everything. Action, suspense, travel, and excitement. I was truly impressed. Matt Fulton knew what he was doing in creating this masterpiece. War...happens alll the time. Yet here, it's more deadly and more serious than any other book I have read. The reality of the after effects and who's all involved can be overwhelming. But Matt Fulton has created it, in a way that is nothing but entertaining. Absolutely and engaging tale. Government, politics, and agents. I loved it. A nightmare that haunts us all has been created for enjoyment. Overall, I highly recommend this read to all.
Matt seems to be one step ahead of the ever changing intricacies of world events. His characters are complex and he has an ability to make you feel as though you were part of the scenes as they take place. Whether it is Washington, Jerusalem, Tehran, Moscow, or Damascus you feel as though you are part of the story. Cant wait for books 2 and 3!
I almost never quit reading a book before gettin 1/4 of the way though. This book felt like a right wing training manual or something. It didn't seem to have a story line nor any worthwhile message. Read excerpts before you buy it! It it's your thing, enjoy!
Active Measures captured and kept my attention from beginning to end. What an exciting adventure! Looking forward to Parts 2 and 3. What a tribute to the author on his first novel!
